Finding a place to live in NYC is tough. Finding a place to live in NYC in a matter of weeks is tougher. I'm just starting the search.
Creative people are often shy, so this is your ice breaker. If you are looking for a place, say so. Let the board know what you are looking for in a room mate.
If you live in NYC and would like to open your doors (and get some help with the rent) let us know.
I am all about getting things in order for this. I am applying for this Alt MBA and I want to be as prepared as possible to make the jump. I have a buddy out this way, and I've started a dialog with him about the possibilities; pending the number of people selected for this opportunity, a small FRBO (For Rent By Owner) on a monthly basis or six month period might not be completely unaffordable if we have 4 to 6 people involved.
Who cares about space? It's all about having a place to sleep when tired, right? We could shove six people into a studio apt in NY and make the best of it no problem. I spent four years sleeping in the captain's chair of a 1987 Ford E-150 with four other guys, we can make this work if we have a plan of action.
And John, I'm not sure how much time there would be for sleeping. Once you add up the hours Seth has planned for the day, plus whatever reading we're doing, there's not going to be much sleeping done.
I have already found several places, but I never bothered to look in NYC. If you check where Hastings is on the map, you're better off looking in one of the small towns up that way. I found a house in Yonkers, 3br, for $1400 a month. Totally doable with roomies. And Yonkers is on the train line, unlike a few other places I looked at like White Plains. That would only work with a car, which I haven't yet decided about bringing.
I'm onboard for sharing a studio apartment until we get things settled down. I know a few people over at Columbia that I can crash at. I'll be in Time Square on New Years. If anyone else will be in the area let me know and we can meet up.
I would come from Europe. So I need a place and roomates, loads! The more, the less rent to pay! hehe!
And as it was mentionned earlier, we won't have too much time to sleep or party so I'm not too bothered about the place as long as I can do my reading, go on the web and have a collective room full of bright people for some productive brainstorming, it's all good. I reckon that it would make more sense to live the closest to the office to avoid wasting time in commuting. Anyway, with so many creative people on board, we're going to reinvent Hastings!!!! It's going to be the most fun place to live in the world!
Keep me posted on your housing finds. I am willing to pay more for my own room, which could help bring down the share of cost for those of you willing to share. My son is at Columbia so I will be going on the 15th from Austin. Also, my son is an expert at finding housing.
I already have a rent-free place arranged for myself (thanks to a little bit of serendipity...) although I'm not sure if she'd be cool to have others join.
I've also had at least five offers from friends for places to stay, so if any of you get into the program, shoot me an email. I'll collect my contacts and see what I can do to help!
I currently have three great friends living in NYC that I have asked about good places to look for housing. I will circle back with the group once I find out more info!
