Managing the logistics of Seth Godin's Alternative MBA

Helping applicants with the logistics of the journey

Dylan Fitzgerald

Having not got in, I am deleting my application lens. But I still love you all!

I know that sounds sad, but as much as I'm actively seeking new opportunities, I'm not actively seeking to get pushed out of my job involuntarily.

That said, I'm curious how many of you are in the same situation. Over the last few weeks I've really enjoyed getting to know some of you from afar by way of oh-so-detailed Lenses, and somehow I doubt they'll all be up come tomorrow morning.

So, those of you in receipt of Seth's (very kind) rejection letter: what are you doing with your application? And now that we don't have to worry about being committed to working in NYC for the next six months, what do you want to build?

I plan on keeping my lens up, I'm just glad that I don't have to use Squidoo anymore. That's probably my only complaint about the whole process was using Squidoo. The UI just feels wrong and not intuitive at all. As someone who uses web tools everyday (Wordpress, Ning, Evernote, BaseCamp etc.) I was often frustrated with getting it to look decent. Hallelujah!

Paul started a group called the Alternative Alternative MBA and he's asking Seth's permission if we could use the lesson plan to form our own DIY group. So that may be cool. Stay active and I'm sure lots of cool stuff will pop up.

I'm leaving mine up. Why not? It got more hits than anything else I posted!! Seth is sending everyone who is not already in Triiibes.com an invite...so, there's that option...or this one too! This one is smaller, less crowded, but possibilities galore! I'm in.

I have no intention of deleting my lens if I don't make it into the program, in part because I'm all over Squidoo and one more lens doesn't really make much difference to me. But also, as I was working on it, I realized that this was what I needed to send people I wanted to work for rather than a normal resume. They want more normal, they can look at my LinkedIn profile or VisualCV. But this would be the real me. I've decided that (barring working for myself) the next place I work for is one that would understand, appreciate and like this particular application. So I'll be tweaking to be more generic and not so specific to Seth, but it stays.

I thought about this too.... While i'm not employed by anyone at the moment, i agree with Susan's rationale. I also need to edit some parts and then add it to my linked In profile once i'm done.

You're right, of course! This is a much more personal expression not only of professional competence, but of where an applicant is going in life. I very much look forward to putting my lens (or, more likely, a derivative work) online in the future, and if you have no restrictions, it sounds like a great idea.

In my case, the "where I'm going in life" part would be read by my current employer as "somewhere else," and they'd probably be correct. I'm keeping the XML export version in the meantime.

And I'll DEFINITELY stick around here / Alt-Alt MBA / Triiibes.

Plus, do consider sticking around and making more lenses. Seth didn't ask for these to be done on Squidoo on a whim. He'd love to have another couple hundred smart, passionate people making lenses there. He's still after making that big pile o' money for charity. (So please do consider giving portions of your money to one of the charities!)

Yeah, I'm keeping lens up. It couldn't really hurt anything.

I wasn't planning on leaving my job if I got accepted. I was going to use it to change the scheduling of my employment. That is the joy of being indispensable. It makes you hard to replace and gives you bargaining power.
